Understanding PON Construction Challenges

Originally aired on February 20, 2019. Now available for on demand viewing.

A certificate of attendance will be offered.

Webcast Description:

Are you in the process of building out your access PON network?  What if you could address the 4 PON construction challenges by adopting a new centralized end-to-end PON test procedure:
    1. a shortage of experienced technicians/contractors
    2. mapping the network as designed vs. built while managing diverse contractors and employees
    3. unexpected problems are found once the network is lit up or home service is activated causing rework and delays
    4. turning leads to cash so that service providers can generate revenue as quickly as possible with sustained quality of service

FTTH, FTTA and PON construction have traditionally been tested exclusively with portable fiber OTDR and scope test equipment.  New centralized PON test procedures have delivered between a 15 to 30% improvement in key metrics of each phase, such as homes passed, leads to cash, MTTR, and first time activation successes.  There is no substitute for end to end visibility in enabling providers to roll out new PON network services cost effectively and confidently.  This is made possible by procedural advances, mobile tools and small foot print centralized OTDR test and monitoring systems.  When test is performed prior to the technician leaving the field using a call to the centralize test system, that section can be approved by a centralized expert/coach and reworked once during that single trip.   Once a section passes the network mapping process ensures all cross connects are all eliminated and details are supplied via API to network management systems, cutting the time in handling reports.

In maintenance mode, new challenges arise when an alarm is triggered.  The centralized system locates physical problems, providing the demarcated view that can rule out physical network causes to avoid unneeded dispatches.  By dispatching the right team to fix, instead of to find problems, service restoration is done in hours vs. days.  Furthermore a centralized solution will allow ongoing management of the network health and possibly new services that can be sold when using a centralized OTDR with distributed strain or temperature test capability too.  Known as fiber optic sensing, this new technology is helpful during construction and when an event such as an ice storm or erosion is threatening your network.
