Electric Vehicles: Is Your Battery Charger Design Performing at Optimal Efficiency?

Electric vehicle battery charger design should be reliable and optimized to deliver minimum charging time and battery life. Virtual prototypes and simulation help engineers to identify characteristics of the battery charger and methods to improve switching strategies and circuit efficiency. High-fidelity and accurate models are required to obtain simulation results close to real-world behavior; but, because the availability of these models is scarce, it can end up consuming time and resources.

This Tech Talk highlights modeling solutions for high-fidelity and accurate models for Power MOSFET and Li-ion batteries, as well as advanced analyzing techniques to identify methods to improve circuit efficiency and detect overstressed components before implementing hardware. It also demonstrates a virtual prototyping solution using SaberRD, a physical simulation tool capable of analyzing and simulating highly accurate and detailed models.

Datsen Davies Tharakan graduated from the University of Nottingham, U.K., with a master’s degree in power electronics and drives. With more than five years of experience as Saber Applications Engineer, he is actively involved in supporting automotive and aerospace customers with design examples, technical articles, and solutions for power electronics design simulations, convergence, and modeling. Before joining Synopsys, Datsen was involved in designing various DC/DC converter topologies at Chirra Power Technologies, India.
