Can 21st-century manufacturing and distribution operations thrive, if supported by 20th-century enterprise systems? The fact is, they can’t.

For small and midsize manufacturers and distributors, SaaS-based enterprise resource planning, so called cloud ERP, is the most effective way to deploy an up-to-date, world-class system. Yet many small-to-midsize manufacturers and distributors remain resident on ERP systems that date to the fax-machine era. As a result, managements pay exorbitant maintenance fees for on-premise ERP that is for all intents and purposes “version-locked” due to past customizations.

Does this sound like someone you know?

Today’s cloud-based ERP features lower upfront, implementation and operating costs. Software versions are always up to date. ERP assets move from being a capital expenditure to an operations expenditure. Moreover, besides lower costs, cloud-resident, mobile-friendly and social media-aware ERP delivers a consistent, role-based and device-independent user experience. A business system becomes a customer-facing commerce system.

Here is an opportunity to get rid of troublesome spreadsheets, improve order processing, make support- and services-provision profitable, and gain control of compliance activities. We’ll also address challenges and risks often associated with cloud-based applications, including security and performance issues and the importance of detailed service-level agreements.
