Simulation of Thermal Stress in 3D Printing

Additive manufacturing has achieved great popularity through the use of polymers in prototyping. From there, it has moved on to the use of metal alloys in the manufacturing of production components, where geometric distortion can occur when the heat source melts too far into the deposited layers and generates new thermal stresses. Residual stresses can warp the final geometry, which may have an adverse impact in applications with tight tolerance requirements in high-value manufacturing.


In this webinar, we will show how to use numerical simulation to investigate this phenomenon with the COMSOL Multiphysics® software. This includes how to create a customized app that readily allows different teams to perform analyses. Following a live demonstration in the software, you can ask questions during the Q&A session.

Shaped metal deposition (SMD) simulation app created using the Application Builder available in COMSOL Multiphysics®. The app computes the residual stresses generated during the manufacturing process and predicts the final deflection of the part.

Borja Lazaro Toralles, Team Leader, Physics Modelling Department, MTC

Borja Lazaro Toralles was awarded his MSc in aerospace vehicle design from Cranfield University. He then joined the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in the U.K. in 2013 as part of the design and simulation area. Currently, he leads the physics modeling team, which spans a broad number of areas of work, including manufacturing processes such as hot isostatic pressing and additive manufacturing. The team also aims to support other areas of the business by integrating and programming complex simulation workflows into custom applications. The MTC mission is to bridge the gap between academia and industry and to accelerate high-value manufacturing technology innovation, evolution, and adoption.




Valerio Marra, Marketing Director, COMSOL

Valerio Marra is the marketing director at COMSOL in Burlington, MA. Previous roles include working in applications, technical support, and sales. Valerio received his PhD in fluid machines and energy systems engineering.
