“Smart Beta” is a new and poorly defined term. There are many different types and categories of smart beta - fundamental, factor-based, strategic, exotic, enhanced, etc. Our panel of experts will provide an overview of what is—and isn’t—“smart beta”, as well as what is driving institutional interest in “smart beta”.

Data from a recent EDHEC-Risk Institute study reveal about 40% of investors surveyed in Europe and North America have already adopted smart-beta indexing strategies. According to a recent P&I article: “Disappointment with the costs and performance of active management is among the main reasons investors switch to smart beta.” But at the same time, smart beta investors “will pay a premium compared to traditional passive management.”

Join P&I and our panel of experts as they attempt to define smart beta and address some of the questions around this strategy and implementation:

  • Factor-based investing has been around for a long time—what makes “smart beta” different, unique or new?
  • What kinds of investment objectives are best met with “smart beta”?
  • What is the role of “smart beta” in total portfolio allocation?
  • What kind of overall portfolio impact are institutions targeting with these strategies—e.g., higher return, greater risk-return efficiency, higher diversification, higher/lower market beta, higher income?
  • Is “smart beta” worth the price—in terms of bps—in terms of risk adjusted return—what’s the right measure to gage cost vs/ benefit?
  • Is there a different title or name that might provide more clarity for investors than “smart beta”?
