Beginning in the early 1990s, engine emission mandates have driven the industry to develop a series of engine design changes that significantly reduced diesel engine emissions. To put the results of these changes in perspective, 200 trucks coming-off the production line today produce less emissions than a single vehicle produced in 1988.
During the same time period, emission reduction levels placed greater stress and demands on engine oils, resulting in oils that had to be continually improved to ensure engine durability and sustain engine oil change intervals. Today's API CJ-4 engine oils are so superior to oils of the past that they can last longer, handle higher operating temperatures and greater soot loads. Fuel economy legislation will continue to drive fuel economy improvements by as much as 20 percent or more by 2018.

Heavy Duty Lubricants Manager
Mark Betner is the Heavy Duty Product Manager for CITGO Lubricants. In this position, he is responsible for initiating and implementing the marketing of new products and human development programs. He oversees communications with the media, trade shows and consumer education.
Mark boasts 35 years of experience in the lubricants business. Since joining CITGO Lubricants in 1989, he has also served as regional technical service representative. Prior to joining CITGO Lubricants, he was a field sales manager and technical training administrator at an independent lubricant company specializing in heavy equipment lubrication.
Mark earned a master's and bachelor's degree in both chemistry and biology from Indiana University. He holds a certification from the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers and is a member of the Truck Maintenance Council.
