Heavy Duty Engine Oils, the Road Ahead

Beginning in the early 1990s, engine emission mandates have driven the industry to develop a series of engine design changes that significantly reduced diesel engine emissions. To put the results of these changes in perspective, 200 trucks coming-off the production line today produce less emissions than a single vehicle produced in 1988.

During the same time period, emission reduction levels placed greater stress and demands on engine oils, resulting in oils that had to be continually improved to ensure engine durability and sustain engine oil change intervals. Today’s API CJ-4 engine oils are so superior to oils of the past that they can last longer, handle higher operating temperatures and greater soot loads. Fuel economy legislation will continue to drive fuel economy improvements by as much as 20 percent or more by 2018.
